Key Biscayne is one of the youngest settlements in the state of Florida. This is because it lies on an island to the south of Miami and South Beach. The island was used as a giant coconut plantation in the first part of the twentieth century, but matters were to change once a bridge was built to connect the island to the mainland. Known as the Rickenbacker Causeway, this four miles of road has made the difference between a coconut plantation and a unique island town which continues to attract visitors from all over the United States and beyond, some of whom decide to settle permanently.

Key Biscayne today is an exclusive resort, attracting high income professionals and business people. The area has, however, put up some resistance to the commercial growth which most of Southern Florida has seen. The residents recently voted that they must have the final say in whether or not any proposed developments go ahead. When the administration of Key Biscayne tried to get this motion revoked, the motion was defeated by an overwhelming majority.

Although development on Key Biscayne is not universally popular, there are still enough hotels to satisfy the demand from high income tourists looking for a secluded and tranquil spot to spend some time, yet still be only a very short trip away from the bustling city of Miami. This is very definitely not a place for the budget traveler, but for the high-end tourist it has so much to offer that the high prices can seem to be a bargain.

Be careful to budget properly if you are coming to Key Biscayne during one of the times when demand is at its highest. The prices do rise for the winter months, as there are so many people who want to take a vacation and get a break from the harsh winters in the north of the country. During the Christmas holidays, the demand is especially severe, as even people who are still at work can take this time off. The college spring break is also priced above the usual tariff, and of course this lasts longer than many people think.

The other time when space is at a premium is during the Key Biscayne tennis tournament. This is one of the largest and best tennis tournaments in the world outside of the Grand Slams, and it attracts the top players from all over the world. You can obviously reduce the expense by traveling as part of a group, and sharing accommodation. If you are a tennis fan, it will be worth your while placing an ad in a tennis magazine looking for like-minded people. Accommodation in Key Biscayne is truly luxurious, but you do have to pay a premium for it. Sharing with other people, whether the trip is for tennis or not, may just be the best way for someone on a more limited budget to get to enjoy Key Biscayne.
