Miami International Airport has had a rapid growth from humble beginnings in the 1920s. When Pan American Airlines opened the field in 1928, it was simply one hangar. In 2007, after 80 years of continual growth, over thirty-three million passengers passed through the airport. Miami International Airport is also the country's leading hub for domestic flights, as so many people travel in from Europe or Latin America to Miami, and then travel on to other destinations from there.

Pan American remained, along with Eastern, one of the two major carriers at Miami International Airport, until both were to go bankrupt at the start of the 90s. Now, the two major carriers are United Airlines and American Airlines. American is now the largest carrier, having swapped a lot of its aircraft and crew to Miami from less profitable domestic routes.
Miami International Airport has continued to expand to meet consumer demand, and remains the best place to enter Florida. There are direct links between the airport and the surface transport which is needed to forward your journey. Free shuttle services can take you from the airport to the nearest railway stations, and it is also well served by local bus services. Taxis offer a direct flat fare service to most of the popular destinations within Miami. Onward travel is about to get even easier, as there is a plan to build a railway station at the airport itself.
