The Dramatic Growth And Recent Troubles Of Miami North

Miami North, or more properly North Miami, is a city in Miami-Dade county, but quite separate from the bustling metropolis of Miami. From its humble beginnings as Arch Creek back in the nineteenth century, North Miami has grown into a city with nearly sixty thousand inhabitants. The major change happened more by accident than design, back in the 1920s. With the draining of farmland which had been flooded, the soil began to lose the condition needed for successful agriculture. At the same time, the Miami land boom was taking place, and there was a great demand for the land just to the north for development.

The hurricane which devastated so much of Florida did not leave North Miami alone, and many of the investors who had backed the project found themselves bankrupt. The town's school, which was still named after Arch Creek, was completely destroyed, although another one was quickly built in its place. The town of North Miami became little changed through the years of the depression, and it was to take the catastrophe of a World War before a dramatic impact was made.

The influx of veterans from the war led to a post war period of rapid growth in North Miami. The construction industry has never been busier, as the increasing city population demanded more housing and commercial buildings. A new and improved school was also built. The form of administration of the city also changed. A city manager now had the responsibility to carry out the policies of the elected representatives. This was also the point at which the current name, the City of North Miami, was officially adopted.

The North Miami of today is a very different one from the North Miami of the post war boom. Although it is still in a period of dramatic growth, along with the rest of Florida, the population is totally different. There is a large Latino and Hispanic population, although by percentage not as large as South Miami or Miami itself. The most striking feature of North Miami is that it has a remarkably high number of people of Haitian descent. Even the new mayor of the town is now of Haitian origin.

The future for North Miami looks uncertain. The massive Biscayne Landings project has had to be bailed out with taxpayers' money, much to the annoyance of the population. Many of te units which have been built stand idle and empty, and in the depressed property market of the last years of this decade, their seems little prospect of any immediate improvement. An economic upturn across the country would no doubt see matters improve to a degree, and Florida as a whole is still very much in a growth phase. At the moment, though, the future does look very uncertain for Miami North.
