Miami South, or South Miami, has grown from humble beginnings as nothing more than farmland into one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. The South Beach districts attracts people from all over the United States, whether they are looking for tranquility or excitement, and it also brings visitors in from all over the world. Many media celebrities are seen in this area. Interestingly, South Miami itself has irregular boundaries due to citizens suing to leave the area, and to the city itself reducing inside to lessen municipal responsibilities.

South Beach has grown into one of the world's premier resort areas in barely more than a century from when the building first took place. This is despite the inevitable setbacks caused by the hurricane of 1926. This hurricane effectively wiped out all of the building which had been accomplished in the previous two decades. What it also did was open the way for the building of a new city in a brand new style. Walk around South Beach today, and you cannot help but notice the Art Deco influence.

Southbeach today is a world apart from its beginnings before the hurricane and the Miami land boom. In fact, it has gone through several critical stages, fundamentally changing character each time. During the second half of the twentieth century, it was often home to retired people living on small fixed incomes. Many of these have migrated to the south from parts of the USA with far harsher winter climates. Now, the city has become far more a young person's city, with beaches and nightlife the major attractions.

South Florida is an oddly shaped metropolitan area, because of the natural features it has to work around. It is extremely narrow from East to West, and in places is only five miles wide. This is because development is limited by the coast to the East and the Everglades to the West. South Florida has an extremely diverse population, which is again a feature of its unique location. There is a great Latin influence here, due to its proximity to Latin America, and there is also a solid core of retirees who have come from states with extremely severe winters.

South Florida, Miami – Fort Lauderdale – Pompano Beach – Metropolitan Area, is made up of three different counties, and has a completely different culture than most of the state of Florida. Much of the northern and central parts of the state have a Southern culture, similar to neighboring Georgia. In the south, the culture is completely different, and owes much to Latin influences. Over a third of the population is of Hispanic or Latino origin. All of this adds to the unique flavor of the area, and to the excitement and attraction of South Beach.
